After a rather below-average May with sub-zero temperatures, we are now in for a heatwave, almost exactly at the start of June. As early as Friday, the temperature mark is expected to climb to record heights in some places. It will remain tropically hot and particularly sweaty at the start of the new week, with a heat hotspot of up to 34 degrees in the east.
With these prospects, it’s easy to praise the current moderate temperatures, even if May has probably fallen short of expectations for most people in general. According to the forecast from Geosphere Austria, little is expected to change in the last few days of May.
Wednesday may see higher temperatures than recently, but rain and occasional thundery showers will be mixed in. It will likely be the warmest in the east, with temperatures reaching up to 25 degrees. In the far west, temperatures will only reach 18 degrees.
On the holiday, it will still be rainy, especially in the morning on the northern side of the Alps, but it will slowly clear up towards the afternoon. Showers and thunderstorms will be most persistent from the Tyrolean lowlands to western Lower Austria. It will be friendlier everywhere else at the start of the day, but there could be the odd shower in the rest of the country as the day progresses. Daytime highs: up to 23 degrees.
Hot phase begins
The hot phase is expected to begin slowly in Austria on Friday. The sun will come out more frequently, with only a few isolated showers in the afternoon. While it remains moderate in the rest of the country at 25 degrees, the 30s could be broken in Innsbruck.
Saturday will be hotter and hotter. Throughout the country, the thermometer climbs above 25 degrees, but in some places, significantly so: especially in the west and east, temperatures rise to 30 degrees, and in the west, even up to 32 degrees.
Sunday will be another sweat-inducing day. It will be hot, especially in the east, with temperatures reaching up to 29 degrees. However, the likelihood of thunderstorms will also increase, with showers moving in from the west, particularly from late afternoon.
A sweaty start to the week
Sweating will continue almost unabated on Monday in eastern Austria, with temperatures reaching up to 31 degrees. Elsewhere, there will be a short “heat break” with maximum temperatures of 28 degrees. The tendency for thunderstorms will increase, especially in the west, and there may also be isolated rainfall in the south.
According to a cautious forecast, the heat is likely to peak for the time being on Tuesday. The 30-degree mark is expected to be reached or, in some places, far exceeded across almost the entire country. It will be particularly tropical in the east with temperatures of up to 34 degrees.
