On Sunday evening, a severe thunderstorm swept across the capital.

On Sunday, a severe thunderstorm swept over the federal capital. Within a few minutes, the sky darkened and the wind roared. What followed in parts of Vienna was reminiscent of apocalyptic scenes. A heavy hailstorm swept across the city on the Danube.

The Vienna professional fire department reported that the MA 68 emergency services were in continuous operation on Sunday evening. During the storm peak, i.e. between 6 and 7 p.m., the control center received emergency calls almost every minute. “More than 30 operations” were registered at the control center.

Due to the enormous squalls, heavy rain, and hail, the fire department operations that became necessary are not surprising.

According to the Austrian Severe Weather Center, the situation has now eased considerably. While five federal states were still affected by hail and thunderstorm warnings during the day, this now only applies to a few districts east of Vienna. However, the danger has been averted for the moment at best, as severe storms could return in the coming hours and days.

Monday will begin mostly dry and often sunny in the east and south, with dense clouds on the northern side of the Alps and rain showers in the far west. During the day, showers and thunderstorms will spread, with a risk of severe weather, including heavy rain and hail, especially in previously affected regions. Apart from the thunderstorms, the wind will mostly blow only weakly to moderately from westerly directions. From west to east, temperatures will reach 18 to 30 degrees.

On Tuesday, dense clouds with some rain showers are expected to persist in the morning. It will dry out in the eastern half of the country by morning, but showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop again in the afternoon. In the west and southwest, rainfall will continue to be frequent and localised, interspersed with thunderstorms, but the eastern lowlands will remain relatively dry for longer periods. Apart from local gusts of thunder, the wind will not play a major role, and highs will range between 19 and 26 degrees.

Wednesday will offer friendly summer weather with plenty of sunshine from Lower Carinthia to Burgenland. On the northern side of the Alps, however, clouds will predominate, and rain showers and thunderstorms will begin to fall from midday, especially in the west, spreading to the Waldviertel and Mostviertel regions towards evening. Once again, there is a risk of thunderstorms, with moderate to brisk southwesterly winds expected to increase. From northwest to southeast, highs will range between 21 and 31 degrees.
