When walking in the woods, it’s not just wild boars you might encounter. This year, there are also a particularly large number of small, dangerous bloodsuckers around. Some experts are even calling it a “tick year.” And many of these small insects, which are classified as mites, carry pathogens that can cause serious diseases such as Lyme disease or early summer meningoencephalitis, or TBE for short. Ticks love high temperatures and high humidity. They are now active almost all year round.
AGES (Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety) reports that ticks have even been found at 1,500 meters above sea level. So be careful when hiking!
In addition, the Hyalomma tick has now been discovered in Styria for the first time. It is unclear how this tick, which originates in Asia, made its way to Central Europe. What is clear, however, is that this species of tick can cause a dangerous fever in humans.
Wear long pants in the forest and check your clothes
Long pants offer protection against tick bites. And a rule of thumb is to shower promptly after spending time in the forest and to check your clothes. To prevent TBE, get vaccinated!
