Not all seats on the plane offer the same comfort or convenience. This is also the result of a new survey of British flight attendants conducted by the International Drivers Association.
Window seats 11A and 11F are particularly uncomfortable. They may seem attractive at first glance, but they have several disadvantages. Travel expert Julianna Marshall explains why:
The disadvantages
Restricted legroom
These seats are often located near the emergency exit rows, but do not always offer more legroom. In some aircraft, the space in these seats may even be restricted due to safety equipment or the structure of the plane.
No windows
On certain aircraft models, seats 11A and 11F do not have windows at all. This is often the case with Ryanair, for example. There have been several complaints about seat 11A.
Cold temperature
As these seats are located near the aircraft exit, the temperature here is often low. This can be uncomfortable, especially on longer flights.
Noise level
Being close to the exit can mean that you are closer to the galleys or toilets, which often leads to higher noise levels. On Norwegian and American Airlines’ Boeing 737s, for example, seats 11A and 11F are located near the toilets.
Always pay attention to the seat configuration for the aircraft model you will be flying on. Airline websites and apps usually offer detailed seat maps.
Read reviews
Online forums and travel review sites offer insights from previous passengers on the pros and cons of specific seats on different aircraft.
Ask the flight crew
When checking in, ask the flight crew about the best available seats. They can give you up-to-date information about the aircraft’s amenities and possibly quieter or more comfortable areas.
Seat upgrade
If comfort is your top priority, consider upgrading to premium economy or business class, where the seat layout and additional benefits provide a more enjoyable flight experience.
