The sky is not clear everywhere, as soot from Canada and dust from North Africa are causing a slight cloudiness. As the heat increases, so does the risk of thunderstorms. The first heatwave of the year slowly comes to an end over the weekend.

Temperatures rise rapidly – up to 35 degrees possible
From Wednesday, temperatures will reach 30 to 33 degrees in large parts of the west and south. According to some forecasts, even up to 35 degrees are possible in places, for example, in Vorarlberg and the Tyrolean Oberland. This will exceed the previous high for the year of 31.8 degrees.

This was measured on May 31 in Innsbruck (Tyrol). In the east, it will take a little longer for the heat to arrive. It is expected to reach cities such as Linz (Upper Austria) and St. Pölten (Lower Austria) on Sunday. The provincial capitals, which have not yet been affected, are then also likely to record 30 degrees or more for the first time.

Weather conditions bring heat, sun, and thunderstorms

Today, Wednesday, it will be warmer across the board. While temperatures will rise in the west and south, freshening winds will temporarily bring cooler air to the north and east. A few rain showers are also possible there, for example from Salzburg (Salzburg) to Eisenstadt (Burgenland). Temperatures will range from around 20 degrees in the Mühlviertel and Waldviertel to 31 degrees in Tyrol and Carinthia.

Thursday will bring sunny weather in the west and the Danube region. In the south – for example in East Tyrol, Carinthia, Styria and Burgenland – sun and clouds will alternate, short rain showers are possible in the Alps. Temperatures will rise to 33 degrees.

On Friday, it will be particularly hot in the west: in Vorarlberg and the Tyrolean Oberland, local temperatures of up to 34 or 35 degrees are possible. In the rest of the country, it will remain mostly sunny, but in the western regions, the risk of thunderstorms will increase in the afternoon.

It will remain sunny on Saturday too – between 25 and 34 degrees is possible. The sun will shine in many parts of the country, but isolated thunderstorms may occur in the west and south. Sunday will be hot again with temperatures between 27 and 35 degrees. In the afternoon and evening, the tendency for thunderstorms will increase, especially in the south and later also in the west.

Vienna and Bad Radkersburg have the hottest days
Since the beginning of the year, Innsbruck (Tyrol) has been the hottest place so far. The first hot day was recorded there on May 2. In Vienna (city center) and Bad Radkersburg (Styria), five heat days have already been recorded since then, and four in Graz. Other provincial capitals such as Bregenz, Linz, and St. Pölten are still waiting for their first 30-degree day, which is now imminent. A comparison of the last few decades shows that hot weather occurs earlier today than in the past. Between 1961 and 1990, the first 30-degree day was usually at the end of May; in the last ten years, it has been mid-May on average.

Cloudy skies due to smoke from Canada and dust from Africa
The sky will not remain clear everywhere in the coming days. This is due to particles coming from far away. Since mid-May, large areas of forest have been burning in several Canadian provinces, including Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario. So far, around 26,000 square kilometers have been destroyed, which is roughly equivalent to the area of Carinthia and Styria combined. With a westerly current, the smoke also reached Europe via the Atlantic and is now causing hazy conditions here. Towards the weekend, dust from the Sahara will also arrive. This also contributes to the slight clouding of the sky. Sunrises and sunsets may be more colorful as a result.

End of the heatwave: cold front brings cooling
On Sunday, the heat will slowly subside in the west. A cold front will bring cooler air here, accompanied by rain showers and thunderstorms. In the east, cooling is expected to follow on Monday. Until then, however, it will remain hot and summery, with short but strong
