Starting on July 1, 2025, there will be more changes for drivers and others in Austria. Specifically, certain things will cost more.
Starting next Tuesday, motorists will once again be asked to pay more. Issuing a driver’s license will cost €29.50 more in the future, bringing the total to €90. The fee for issuing a registration certificate will also increase significantly: in the future, registering a car will cost around €265.
The reason is a tax increase
“These fee increases are already the fifth and sixth tax and levy adjustments that motorists have had to bear this year. It is telling that the state budget, which has spiralled out of control, is once again to be balanced by reaching into the wallets of motorists. The increase in the registration fee is not only antisocial, but also unfair to all those who depend on their cars every day – whether for commuting to work, shopping, or visiting family,” says KommR Mag. Gerald Kumnig, ARBÖ Secretary General, criticizing the cost explosion. It would be more important to relieve the burden on motorists instead of constantly taking money out of their pockets with new tax increases: “For years, governments have been unable to come up with anything other than increasing taxes on motorized individual mobility. Yet Austrians already pay around 15 billion euros into the budget every year. That is more than enough,” said Gerald Kumnig.
Changes in the Vienna city area
There are also changes to parking in the Vienna city area: since the beginning of 2025, new, higher rates have been in effect for short-term parking zones in Vienna. Old short-term parking tickets can still be used until June 30, 2025. Then this transition period will end, and unused short-term parking tickets will lose their validity. “It is particularly annoying that old short-term parking tickets cannot be exchanged for new ones. Once again, the city of Vienna is earning a nice bit of extra cash at the expense of motorists,” concludes ARBÖ Secretary General Gerald Kumnig.
From July 1, 2025, only short-term parking tickets with the following rates may be used:
30 minutes: €1.30
60 minutes: €2.60
90 minutes: €3.90
120 minutes: €5.20
