Samsung recently unveiled the seventh generation of its foldable family. In 2026, the Koreans are likely to face serious competition for the first time.
It’s the classic Apple tactic—products are usually only launched when they are completely mature. That can take a very, very long time. Now it’s becoming clear: after years of development and research, the iPhone Fold seems to be well on its way to satisfying Apple’s top management.
This is according to the usually well-informed Apple insider and Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman. According to his information, the iPhone Fold is set to be released to customers at the end of 2026, together with the iOS 27 operating system. The model is likely to be based on the proven design of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold, featuring both an external and internal display.
The industry does not expect any revolutionary approaches, but Apple is reportedly implementing significant improvements compared to its competitors. According to this, the fold of the internal display is said to be virtually invisible when unfolded, and the quality of the folding hinge is also said to be above average.
What else do we think we know? The flexible AMOLED display inside is likely to come from Samsung or LG, measuring up to 7.8 inches when unfolded, while a 5.5-inch screen is likely to be used on the outside. According to rumors, Apple is expected to use titanium for the case, which is lighter and more robust than stainless steel frames.
Insiders also claim to have learned of a dual primary camera (a telephoto lens will be omitted for space reasons) with 48-megapixel sensors. Other sources also mention a selfie cam hidden under the display on the inside and a selfie camera with a screen notch on the outside.
Users will have to do without facial recognition or Face ID. Instead, the iPhone giant is reportedly integrating a fingerprint scanner into one of the buttons. A similar technology is currently used in the latest iPad mini, for example.
In an analysis, the central Swiss bank UBS also assumes that Apple will enter the foldable market. Experts already have a clear idea of the price. Apple wants to present a top smartphone with the Fold, but is not pulling out all the stops for cost reasons. The cheapest model could therefore be priced at around $1,800 upwards, while Samsung’s current Fold costs at least $2,000 (excluding taxes).
