Austria’s population is growing, and this is exclusively due to migration. The central thesis of Statistics Austria’s yearbook on migration and integration is reflected in all the figures. Currently, around 9 million people live in Austria, 2.5 million of whom have a migration background.

This number is growing year after year, across all federal states. Vienna also rose by 1.12 percent last year, or around 22,500 people in absolute terms.

This is also evident when looking at migration patterns.

A total of 178,574 people moved to Austria from abroad last year, while 128,469 emigrated. This results in a net increase of around 50,000, with Vienna naturally accounting for the largest share at almost 40 percent. Sixty-eight thousand one hundred sixty-eight people came to the federal capital from abroad. In contrast, just under 48,000 people left Vienna and Austria, resulting in a net increase of almost 20,000.

However, while Vienna has a positive balance in terms of external migration, the situation is quite different when it comes to movement within the federal states. Keyword: internal migration.

In 2024, 36,584 people moved to Vienna from within Austria, while 37,732 people left the federal capital. This means that Vienna’s population shrank by 1,148 people.

Vienna’s Favoriten district is the most popular

The district with the highest interest in moving to is Favoriten. Last year, almost 8,124 people from abroad moved to the district, which has a population of just under 220,000. At the same time, 5,251 people left the district to move overseas, resulting in a net increase of 2,873.

Donaustadt (balance of 1,683) and Alsergrund (1,383) lag significantly behind. Unsurprisingly, the Innere Stadt comes in last in this ranking.

Growing Donaustadt

But even though Floridsdorf is the number one destination for immigrants, it is another district that has seen the strongest growth recently: Donaustadt. At the beginning of the year, around 228,000 residents were registered there, an increase of 3.34 percent compared to the previous year. It is followed by Leopoldstadt (+2.34 percent) and Liesing (+1.99 percent).

On the other hand, seven districts have shrunk in the last year: the Innere Stadt has lost around 1.55 percent of its residents.
