VIENNA—On August 4, 2025, the pioneering group of Filipino nurses who arrived in Austria in 1975 marked their 50th anniversary with a heartfelt reunion in Vienna. The gathering was a moment of reflection and pride, as the nurses shared memories of their decades-long journey serving in Austria’s healthcare system.
The event brought together former colleagues and friends, now retired, who once helped shape the foundations of intercultural nursing care in the country. Many of these nurses arrived during a period when Austria faced a shortage of healthcare professionals. Their skills, dedication, and resilience not only filled a critical gap but also paved the way for future generations of Filipino healthcare workers in Europe.
To formally recognize their contributions, the Retired Filipino Nurses Association in Austria (RFNAA) will honor the group at a special event on August 30, 2025, at the Marriott Hotel Vienna. Dignitaries from the Austrian Health Ministry and officials from the Philippine Embassy are expected to attend.
“This is more than a celebration of careers—it’s a celebration of courage, culture, and the impact of a community,” said an RFNAA spokesperson.
The 50th anniversary marks an important milestone in the history of Filipino migration and healthcare service abroad, highlighting the enduring legacy of compassion and professionalism that these nurses brought with them five decades ago.
