The new school year begins on September 1 in Vienna, Lower Austria, and Burgenland. In the other federal states, school starts on September 8. Here are the most important dates at a glance.
The temporary timetable must be ready by the following day. As lessons not only start early, but also end late on July 3 (west: July 10), pupils will spend a week longer in the classroom in the 2025/26 school year than in previous years.
2025/26 school year particularly long
The longer school year is simply due to the calendar and the School Hours Act: According to this, the school year in the east begins on the first Monday in September and ends on July 3 at the latest. In the other federal states, this is one week later. The first break in the longest possible school year is at the end of October, when the autumn holidays are scheduled between the national holiday (October 26) and All Souls’ Day (November 2). Since both days fall on a Sunday this year, unlike in other years, there are no “bridge days” this time to extend the autumn holidays with school-autonomous days.
Easter holidays in the 2025/26 school year from the end of March
Thanks to the Feast of the Immaculate Conception (December 8), which falls on a Monday, Advent begins with a long weekend. December 24 falls on a Wednesday this year and marks the beginning of the Christmas holidays, which this time last until January 6, a Tuesday. The semester break in Vienna and Lower Austria this school year falls in the week from February 2 to 8. Burgenland, Carinthia, Salzburg, Tyrol, and Vorarlberg follow from February 9 to 15, with Upper Austria and Styria finishing from February 16 to 22.
Students will have their Easter holidays from March 28 to April 6. The public holiday on May 1 brings the next long weekend. The following Tuesday (May 5), the written central school-leaving examination begins at the AHS and vocational high schools (BHS) with the subject German. English, the next subject with a particularly large number of examinees, follows on May 7, and mathematics is on May 11. The last exam, Greek, is on May 15.
Last day of school in the 2025/26 school year on July 3 and 10
The next opportunity for a long weekend will be in mid-May: the first of the two Thursday public holidays falls on May 14, Ascension Day, so the following Friday would be a school-autonomous day. As in previous years, the Pentecost holidays will last only three days, this time from May 23 to 25. Since the introduction of the general fall break, classes are held as normal on the Tuesday after Pentecost—unless the school decides to make it a day off. June 4 is Corpus Christi, the last public holiday before the school holidays, and the following Friday is also a good candidate for a school-autonomous day.
The last day of school is relatively late this time, namely July 3 in eastern Austria and July 10 in the other provinces. On September 7, students in Vienna, Lower Austria, and Burgenland will return to class after the long vacation. A week later, the 2026/27 school year will also begin in Carinthia, Upper Austria, Salzburg, Styria, Tyrol, and Vorarlberg.
