Vienna is getting a new tram connection—line 12. It will be running regularly in time for the start of school on Monday (September 1). On Friday, the tram completed its maiden voyage on the new route. Among other things, the 12 will serve the Nordbahnviertel district, where thousands of apartments have recently been built. It will mostly run on existing tracks, but part of the route has also been newly built.

Vienna tram line 12 made its maiden voyage

During rush hour, trains on the new line will mostly run every 8 minutes, according to today’s maiden voyage with City Councillor for Transport Ulli Sima (SPÖ). The terminus stations are located on Hillerstraße and at the U6 station Josefstädter Straße. The 2.2-kilometer-long new route was built between Nordbahnstraße and Hillerstraße. It comprises five stations and partly runs on a green track. At the Rebhanngasse stop, the route branches off to the existing tracks of line 2.

The rest of the route via Höchstädtplatz through Brigittenau and Alsergrund will run on the tracks currently used by line 33. A further expansion stage is also being considered, namely when the Nordwestbahn site becomes an urban development area in the somewhat distant future. Line 12 could then run through this area, which is currently still undeveloped.
