Did you know that folded toilet paper in hotels can be pretty dangerous? Here you can find out why and how to protect yourself.

You may think that folded toilet paper in hotels is just a harmless sign of cleanliness and attention to detail. But wait! Stay away from folded toilet paper in hotels—here’s why! In this article, you’ll learn why this seemingly innocent detail poses a hidden danger that could affect your health and well-being. Read on to find out why you shouldn’t use toilet paper in hotels.

For many vacationers, cleanliness in hotels is the be-all and end-all. According to a survey by the market research institute Innofact, cleanliness in hotels is a more important criterion for the quality of a vacation than beautiful, sunny weather for many travelers. According to the survey, around 71 percent of respondents said they would not compromise on cleanliness while on vacation. This is understandable, of course, because even the most beautiful beach with great weather cannot save a dirty hotel room.

In higher-priced hotels, you can usually rely on hygiene being a top priority. Not only will you find little extras in the bathroom, such as small samples of shampoo or shower gel, but also often a small fruit plate and complimentary bottles of water.

To signal to guests that the toilet paper has not yet been used, many cleaning staff also fold the end of the toilet paper. Although this looks nice, this method is not hygienic at all.

The reason: to fold the toilet paper in the hotel, the cleaner had to touch the paper. Now, one could argue that the cleaning staff certainly adhere to hygiene regulations when cleaning.

However, a chambermaid told the online magazine Focus that this is not always the case. She told the magazine that not all employees wash their hands or use gloves when replenishing the toilet paper.

The reason is germs and bacteria

So if you have a cleaner in your room who doesn’t take the regulations too seriously, bacteria or germs may end up on the toilet paper. The chambermaid therefore advises all hotel guests not only to remove the fold but also two to three layers of toilet paper. This way, you’ll be on the safe side and won’t have to deal with a virus or other illnesses later on.
