But not everyone wants to buy expensive fertilizers—and they don’t have to. A sustainable solution can be found right in the kitchen: eggshells.
Eggshells are rich in calcium—an essential nutrient that supports plant growth and prevents blossom end rot. Instead of throwing the shells in the trash after breakfast, they can be reused as natural fertilizer. This not only saves money but also protects the environment.
The application is very simple: first, the eggshells should be washed thoroughly to remove any egg residue. They can then be either air-dried or baked in the oven at a low temperature (around 200 °C) to kill any bacteria.
Once dry, they can be easily ground into powder—either by hand, in a mortar, or with a blender. If you want to speed up the process, you can soak the powder in a little vinegar overnight. This makes the calcium more readily available to plants.
In addition to eggshells, there are numerous other kitchen scraps that make excellent fertilizers. Coffee grounds provide nitrogen, banana peels supply plants with potassium, and potato water contains valuable minerals. Fireplace ashes, green tea, and even hair can also add nutrients to the soil.
By recycling these simple household products, you can care for your plants sustainably—without any chemical additives. With a little creativity and minimal effort, you can create a blooming, healthy garden while doing something good for the environment.
