German and British researchers followed over 230 young adults for four weeks and asked them to document their mood and coffee consumption seven times a day. The result: participants reported feeling significantly happier and more motivated on mornings when they drank coffee than on days without coffee.
A boost of energy and well-being from caffeine
The effect on mood is particularly pronounced within two and a half hours of waking up. The key? Caffeine blocks adenosine receptors, a sleep-promoting molecule, leading to increased alertness and energy. This biological mechanism explains why morning coffee stimulates positive emotions from the start of the day.
A universal and context-independent effect
The study shows that the effect of coffee on feelings of happiness is independent of consumption habits, sleep patterns, or the extent of anxiety or depression. Even people with low caffeine dependence experience this boost in happiness. Note: Coffee primarily enhances positive emotions without significantly reducing stress or anxiety.
The limits of caffeinated bliss
The benefits are apparent, but excessive consumption can lead to addiction and sleep disorders. Experts recommend enjoying coffee in the morning for its invigorating effect, but not drinking too much later in the day.
Drinking coffee in the morning boosts your energy and increases your chances of getting the day off to a good start—science has now made this a certainty for enthusiasts.
