Although the major summer construction projects affecting public transport in Vienna have been completed, there will continue to be disruptions to subway and tram services in the coming weeks due to construction work.
The major closures have been over since the beginning of September—regular service has resumed on the S-Bahn trunk line between Praterstern and Floridsdorf, as well as on the U4 between Friedensbrücke and Schottenring.
There will be one more restriction on the U4 this year. At Landstraße station, the platforms are being resurfaced, and a new floor information system for visually impaired people is being installed. From September 22, no underground trains heading towards Heiligenstadt will stop at Landstraße station, and from November 3 to December 4, the platform heading towards Hütteldorf will be closed.
Work on the U6 station Tscherttegasse will also continue until December. The station is being expanded, and, among other things, an additional elevator is being installed. Until December, no underground trains heading towards Floridsdorf will stop at this station.
Switch replacement on the U6
During the fall break between October 27 and November 3, the U6 will be suspended between the Spittelau and Jägerstraße stations while switches are replaced in that area. In the southern section, every second U6 will then only run between Siebenhirten and Michelbeuern–AKH.
Tram line 12 in the Nordbahnviertel district
As an alternative in the 20th district, the new tram line 12, which has been in operation since the beginning of September, will be available during the fall break. More frequent service is planned for the fall break, and line 12 will also run at night on weekends.
Also from the start of the fall break, Wiener Linien will be renewing the tracks on line 49 in the Bujattigasse area. Until November 7, the tram will therefore only run between Ring, Volkstheater, and Baumgarten. From September 15 until the end of September, line 5 will only run between Praterstern and Josefstädter Straße due to track work on Blindengasse. Until the end of the year, line 18 will only run between Burggasse and St. Marx due to renovation work on Schlachthausgasse and work on the route extension to the future terminus at the Ernst Happel Stadium.
