Romantic relationships are increasingly influenced by social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. Social media often fuels envy and jealousy. But social media can also have a positive effect on romantic relationships.

On Instagram, TikTok, and other platforms, influencers and private individuals give their followers insights into their lives and relationships. Even though these insights are usually embellished, users take them as an opportunity to measure the quality of their own relationship and their partner’s behavior against social media content. Social media can negatively influence romantic relationships by triggering emotions such as envy and jealousy. A new study by Philipp Armin Krämer now shows that social media can also enrich romantic relationships.

As part of the study “The Influence of Social Media on Relationships,” Krämer surveyed 100 participants and examined the role of social media in the development and maintenance of romantic relationships. Krämer also explored the extent to which social media influences the planning and execution of joint activities.

Social media inspires new couple activities

The results of the study show that younger respondents are more likely to experience envy and jealousy, while respondents aged 20 and above view social media predominantly positively. They say they use social media to gather inspiration for joint activities, get relationship advice, or find topics of conversation, for example. Thirty percent of study participants use social media to share joint experiences with other users and strengthen their bond. Seventy-three percent are inspired by the content to engage in new couple activities. As Krämer reports in a press release, social media also has a positive impact on finding a partner. Seventy percent of respondents stated that social media makes it easier to meet new potential partners.

Overall, it appears that older users in particular are rarely negatively influenced by social media in their relationships. Social media can even promote relationship satisfaction and stability, encourage communication, and strengthen trust in one’s partner.
