Nighttime is probably the best time to actively save electricity. That’s when you’re least likely to notice that your electrical appliances are not in use. However, it’s also particularly important to be aware that there are energy guzzlers in your household for which this method is highly recommended.
Energy guzzlers in the household: Pay attention to three devices
Just because you’re asleep doesn’t mean your electrical appliances are too. On the contrary, standby mode, unused plugs, and the like ensure that energy continues to flow at night. You’re sure to find the following energy guzzlers in your home.
#1 Charging cables
Whether it’s your cell phone, laptop, or controller, you’re likely to find some devices whose charging cables are plugged into the wall but not in use. If you charged devices before going to bed and then simply unplugged them, you are still consuming electricity without realizing it. What helps, for example, are power strips with an off switch or simply unplugging the devices.
#2 Television
Your TV can become a power guzzler at night in two ways. If you often fall asleep in front of it but don’t use the built-in timer function to turn it off automatically, you’re wasting a lot of energy unnecessarily while you sleep. On the other hand, TVs are among those devices that consume a lot of power even in standby mode. Here, too, it’s worth unplugging the power cord completely.
#3 Wi-Fi router
If there’s one electrical device that runs 24 hours a day, it’s your Wi-Fi router. It may be worth switching off your FritzBox and similar devices at night. If you don’t have any important secondary devices connected, you can save a few euros a year this way. However, you should be careful if smart home assistants or answering machines are connected to it. Frequent deactivation can cause problems.
