Coffee every day—that’s how we like it. But how healthy is it really? On Coffee Day, we take a look at the most interesting myths, the latest studies, and a few surprising facts. Spoiler alert: The truth is usually much more relaxed than you might think.
Coffee: Myth or truth?
1. “Coffee dehydrates you”
Not true. Yes, caffeine has a short-term diuretic effect, but the water in coffee easily compensates for this. So if you think you need to drink twice as much water after every cup, you can breathe easy.
2. “Coffee causes heart disease.”
A classic—and pretty outdated. Studies show that drinking 3–4 cups a day has more health benefits than disadvantages.
3. “Coffee in the evening kills your sleep.”
It depends. Some people lie awake like an owl after 5 p.m., while others sleep like a log. The decisive factors are metabolism, habituation, and the time of day.
4. “Unfiltered coffee raises cholesterol.”
This is partly true: Varieties such as Turkish or French press contain cafestol, which can affect cholesterol levels. Filter coffee is the more relaxed choice here.
Current studies: What does science say?
More benefits than harm: An extensive analysis shows that coffee drinkers tend to live longer, have fewer cardiovascular diseases, and benefit from liver diseases.
Drinking in the morning is worthwhile: People who enjoy coffee mainly in the morning have a lower risk of heart problems than people who refill their cups throughout the day.
Diabetes & dementia: Moderate amounts (3–5 cups a day) are associated with a lower risk of type 2 diabetes and even dementia.
Stress factor cortisol: Coffee can increase cortisol levels in the short term – especially in stressful moments.
Addiction possible: Caffeine withdrawal symptoms appear quickly: headaches, irritability, or fatigue—sometimes after just 12 hours without coffee.
Filter coffee is the healthiest: The reason is that filtering essentially removes harmless but cholesterol-raising substances such as cafestol.
Most coffee myths are exaggerated. Instead of worrying about dehydration or heart damage, it’s worth knowing the facts: moderate coffee consumption is not only harmless, but often even beneficial. So, dear coffee fans: today, on Coffee Day, you can raise your cup with a clear conscience – and maybe even pour yourself a second one.
