In the current energy crisis, we are trying to save money wherever possible. When we leave a room, we turn off the lights, we only wash our laundry at low temperatures, and we only turn on the heating when it is really necessary. However, we are making a mistake when it comes to heating by turning off the heating at night. In this article, you will find out why.
Turning off the heating at night: Not a good idea
Heating is becoming increasingly expensive. This is due to rising electricity, gas, and gasoline costs. This price increase is tempting many people to heat less or turn off their heating overnight. Many even turn down their radiators when they leave the house for a few hours.
However, this supposed cost-saving measure has the opposite effect and actually causes heating costs to skyrocket. This is because the apartment or house cools down completely overnight in winter without heating. To get the rooms warm again the next morning, you usually have to turn the heating up to full power. This not only consumes a lot of energy, but also costs a lot of money.
Federal Environment Agency: Turn down the heating
The Federal Environment Agency recommends turning down the heating in living and working spaces by 4 to 5 degrees at night to save heating costs – this is known as night-time temperature reduction. The BMUV (Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection) advises turning down the heating, especially at night, and keeping the temperature of the radiators constant during the day.
It is therefore better not to turn off the heating overnight, but to leave it running at a low setting. Incidentally, setting two on the heating is best, as this promises a constant room temperature of 16 to 18 degrees Celsius. According to sleep experts, this temperature is also the best for falling asleep and sleeping healthily.

Why you should run the heater on a low setting
The heater should also be run on a low setting because this can prevent costly and harmful consequences. Cold rooms and condensation forming on the windows can quickly lead to mould growth.
To prevent this alone, it may be worth leaving the heating on and running it at a low setting overnight. You should also ventilate regularly.
