Coronavirus activity is currently increasing rapidly throughout Austria. Where the numbers are particularly high and what they tell us.
More or less right on time for the start of school, the coronavirus wave has reached Austria with a new variant. The BA.2.86 descendant “Stratus” (XFG) clearly dominates the infection situation.
The recombination of the two known Omicron variants LF.7 and LP.8.1.2 was first detected last year in the country’s wastewater. Since the end of June 2025, “Stratus” has been classified by the WHO as a “variant under monitoring” and is being closely monitored.
Rightly so, because according to clinical records from the Department of Virology at MedUni Vienna, cases have recently doubled within a week.
However, the viral load in wastewater is also currently increasing steadily. At the same time, according to the Austrian Health Insurance Fund, the number of employees absent from work due to SARS-CoV-2 infection has risen by a third compared to the previous week. Hospitals have also recorded more inpatient admissions with COVID-19 since the second week of September.
However, one federal state currently stands out significantly. Vienna not only has the highest curve in wastewater monitoring: of the 3,113 ÖGK-insured persons on sick leave due to infection with the coronavirus, 1,045 are in the federal capital alone.
Vienna also leads the way in terms of inpatient Covid-19 admissions in Austrian hospitals. Twenty-three patients recently ended up in a regular ward here.
The numbers are not much lower in Styria with 19, Upper Austria with 18, and Lower Austria with 17 patients. Fortunately, intensive care is not currently necessary throughout the country.
