“Das crazy” has been voted the German youth word of the year 2025. In a vote held by Langenscheidt publishers among the three terms nominated this year, “das crazy” came in first place – ahead of ‘goonen’ and “checkst du.” The winning word was announced live in front of an audience at the Frankfurt Book Fair.
“Das crazy” is “an all-purpose phrase used when you are speechless or don’t feel like giving a proper answer,” according to the Deutsche Presse Agentur’s (DPA) description of the meaning behind the term. “Das crazy” is therefore comparable to ‘aha’ and “okay.”
In first place with a 0.2 percent lead
With 35.7 percent, “das crazy” finished just ahead of “goonen.” The “slang word for masturbation” (quote from dpa) came in at 35.5 percent. “Checkst du” finished in third place. “This term is often used at the end of a sentence to make sure that the other person really understands what is being said.”
Since the campaign started at the end of May, almost two million votes have been cast online in the anonymous poll. “Only the 11 to 20 age group was considered for both voting and submitting suggestions,” said a spokeswoman. “We have to rely on participants to truthfully state their age.”
Langenscheidt Publishing has been publishing the Youth Word of the Year since 2008. Last year’s winner was the word “aura,” which describes a person’s special charisma and charisma. It is only since 2020 that young people between the ages of 11 and 20 have been exclusively voting for the Youth Word of the Year.
