Not only is the Austria-wide climate ticket becoming significantly more expensive, but most regional climate tickets and annual tickets in the federal states will also soon cost more. The price increases are particularly high in Upper Austria and Vienna. At the Verkehrsverbund Ost-Region (VOR) in Salzburg, Styria, and Vorarlberg, fares are rising by single-digit percentages, while in Carinthia, there will be no increase at all.
The price of the nationwide Klimaticket Austria was increased from €1,095 to €1,300 in September and will rise again to €1,400 at the turn of the year. Taken together, these two increases represent a jump of just under 28 percent. The annual ticket for Wiener Linien will increase by the same amount: it will cost €467 instead of the previous €365, although there is a discount for the digital version. However, the price of this annual ticket has not been increased since 2013.
19 percent more expensive in Upper Austria, 7.7 percent in the eastern region
In Upper Austria, the price of the KlimaTicket will increase by almost 19 percent: from January 1, the KlimaTicket OÖ Regional (province excluding Linz, Wels, and Steyr) will cost 467 euros instead of the previous 393 euros, and the KlimaTicket OÖ Gesamt (including city transport in the three statutory cities) will cost 703 euros instead of the last 592 euros. According to the Upper Austrian Transport Association, the price increase is “in line” with that of the Austria-wide KlimaTicket.
The Verkehrsverbund Ost-Region (VOR) transport association adjusted the prices for the VOR Klimaticket MetropolRegion (valid in Vienna, Lower Austria, and Burgenland) and Region tickets, as well as for the VOR Strecken annual tickets, on September 1. The price increase was 7.7 percent and was based on the latest indexation of the nationwide Klimaticket, according to the association. It was emphasized that this was the first increase since the introduction of the VOR Klimaticket in 2022. The VOR Klimaticket MetropolRegion now costs €898 for a one-time payment, compared to €860 previously. The Klimaticket Region, which is only valid in Lower Austria and Burgenland, costs €533, compared to €495 previously. The fare for the Vienna core zone forms the base amount for all VOR fares that include the core zone, which is why there will be a corresponding ticket price adjustment for these routes at the turn of the year, according to APA’s inquiry.
Salzburg, Styria, and Vorarlberg only increase slightly
In Vorarlberg, the annual ticket will cost 14 euros more in 2026, with ticket prices adjusted annually in line with the cost index, according to a response to an inquiry. The base price will rise from 434 to 448 euros (up 3.2 percent). However, there have already been various discounts and combinations, so that most adults will probably have to pay 396 euros for a KlimaTicket VMOBIL maximo next year.
Prices in Styria are rising by a similar amount. Here, the climate ticket costs 499 euros until July 1, 2025, and is now available for 514 euros. Graz is a special case, however, as the Klimaticket is subsidized by €100 for people whose primary residence is in the provincial capital. This means that the Klimaticket costs Graz residents only €414.
In Salzburg, prices for regional Klimatickets will only increase minimally in 2026. According to the Salzburg Transport Association, the “Classic” climate ticket will increase in price by 1.5 percent and will now cost 399 euros instead of 393 euros. The surcharge for the “Plus” version – the ticket becomes transferable, and a second person can travel for free on weekends and public holidays – remains the same at 100 euros. The prices for climate tickets for all under-26s and seniors will increase by €4 to €299, while the “Super s’COOL Card” for schoolchildren and apprentices will now cost €99 instead of €96. Since the introduction of the annual ticket for all public transport in the province of Salzburg, the price increase has been around half the general inflation rate.
No price increase in Carinthia, still uncertainty in Tyrol
Public transport users in Carinthia will be spared for the time being. “There are currently no plans to increase the price of the Carinthia ticket,” said the office of the responsible provincial councillor Sebastian Schuschnig (ÖVP) in response to an APA inquiry.
In Tyrol, it was not yet clear how much the climate ticket would increase in price in the federal state. The state referred to the ongoing preparations for next year’s budget, which is to be decided in the state parliament in December. “Due to the ongoing discussions, no final information can be given about the amount of the annual fare adjustment planned for April 1,” it said. In April of this year, the price of the climate ticket was increased from around 562 to 590 euros.
