A new study shows that Vienna International Airport ranks in the middle of the pack in Europe. The frontrunners come from Turkey and Portugal, while Crete and Bordeaux bring up the rear.

After an intense travel season, the vacation rental portal Holidu examined 50 of Europe’s most-used airports based on their Google ratings—the result: significant differences in organization, comfort, and service. The data was collected in June 2025 and shows where passengers prefer to depart from—and where frustration is high.

Vienna International Airport: Stable position in the middle of the pack

Vienna International Airport achieved a solid 13th place in the European comparison with 3.9 out of 5 stars. Travelers particularly appreciate the good accessibility and clear procedures in the terminals. However, there is criticism of long waiting times at security checks and high prices in restaurants and shops. Nevertheless, Vienna performs better than many major international airports—such as Paris-Charles-de-Gaulle (3.7) and London-Heathrow (3.6).

The best airports in Europe in 2025

1st place: Istanbul Airport, Turkey – 4.4 stars

Europe’s largest airport impresses with its organization, cleanliness, and modern architecture. Despite its huge passenger volume, operations remain smooth.

2nd place: Porto Airport, Portugal – 4.4 stars

Travelers praise the clearly laid-out terminals and short distances. Check-in and boarding are efficient, and the culinary offerings are described as pleasantly diverse.

3rd place: Helsinki Airport, Finland – 4.4 stars

The Finnish capital’s airport scores highly for its cleanliness, design, and fast security checks. The clear layout ensures a stress-free travel atmosphere.

The worst airports in Europe

1st place: Heraklion Airport, Crete – 2.6 stars

The Greek holiday airport once again comes in last place—main criticisms: overcrowding, outdated infrastructure, and chaotic processes.

2nd place: Bordeaux-Mérignac, France – 3.0 stars

Construction sites, limited services, and poor cleanliness cause discontent among passengers.

3rd place: Charleroi Airport, Belgium – 3.1 stars

Long waiting times and insufficient staff make the low-cost airport a test of patience for travelers.

Vienna scores points for structure, but there is room for improvement in terms of comfort

Vienna-Schwechat performs well in a European comparison but loses points in terms of comfort and price level. Especially in summer, when millions of travelers are on the move, the differences between modern hubs and overloaded regional airports become clear.

If you want to travel stress-free, you should allow extra time for security checks—whether in Vienna, Paris, or London.
