Fire red will be burned into the memory of many Austrian road users. This is the color of the last “real” sticker—i.e., the highway vignette—for motorcycles and cars. The annual vignette for 2026 has been available for purchase since Wednesday, still in physical form for sticking on. From 2027, the highway vignette will only be available in digital form.
The price has risen slightly compared to this year. The annual vignette for single-track motor vehicles now costs €42.70 (in 2025 it was €41.50), and the vignette for passenger cars costs €106.80 (instead of €103.80). The sticker can be purchased throughout Austria at around 100 traffic machines and a total of 3,500 Asfinag sales outlets, such as tobacconists, toll booths, gas stations, ÖAMTC, and ARBÖ. It can be purchased digitally in the official Asfinag toll shop or in the Asfinag app.
To be able to use it from December 1 this year, the vignette must be purchased by November 13 at the latest.
Asfinag prepares for vignette changeover
According to Asfinag, more than 75 percent of all annual vignettes are already digital. From next year, this figure will rise to 100 percent. “No one needs to be afraid of buying the digital vignette or have general fears about not being able to buy a vignette—we guarantee that everyone will be able to purchase the digital version in time from 2027 through a comprehensive distribution system, online toll shop, vending machines, and intensive information,” Asfinag said in a statement.
Austria is not a pioneer with its purely digital toll system. Slovenia, Slovakia, Hungary, and Czechia have already had such systems in place for some time.
