In recent days, many people have turned on their heating for the first time this year to warm up their homes. Especially if the utility bill for 2024, which tenants will receive in 2025, is high, it’s worth taking a look at the costs. The question of whether to turn off the heating at night to save money therefore seems quite logical at first glance
Turn off the heating at night? These rules must be observed
The myth is that turning off the heating at night saves money. After all, we are asleep then and cold rooms do not bother us. It is also possible to restart the system digitally or manually in the morning. However, this is precisely where experts advise against doing so.
There are several good reasons for maintaining a minimum temperature in living spaces.
#1 Poor insulation increases costs
It is logical that the room temperature drops as soon as the heat supply is turned off. However, if you live in an apartment that needs insulation repairs, you should definitely not turn off the heating at night. This causes the environment to cool down even more, which means higher energy consumption the next morning.
If you want to reach the desired room temperature again the next day, you will end up having to heat more. And the savings made at night will be lost.
#2 Mold growth
As advised by the Federal Environment Agency (UBA), the ideal temperature for proper heating is 17 to 18 degrees Celsius (°C), depending on the room. Otherwise, walls and ceilings could cool down so much that mold could form—the reason: moisture condenses more easily there and penetrates the surfaces. A sufficiently high room temperature in winter prevents this.
Experts from Dein-Heizungsbauer.de therefore confirm: “Even though it is tempting to turn off the heating completely at night, this makes little sense in practice.”
How do I heat properly?
So what can you do without turning off the heating at night? Here are a few tips on how to heat properly. In general, it can also make sense to turn down the heat at night. Even though a temperature of around 18 °C is recommended for most rooms, it can undoubtedly be colder. The risk of mold growth only increases as temperatures drop.
The type of heating system also plays a role, explains Dein-Heizungsbauer.de: “With underfloor heating and heat pumps, for example, it is not worth lowering the temperature at night,” it says.
