Polar cold air from the north and a low-pressure system over northern Italy, bringing plenty of moist air, are creating the conditions for the first snowflakes across Austria.

Cold front brings pre-winter weather

“The exact forecast of where and how much it will snow in the coming days is still uncertain,” said Josef Haslhofer of GeoSphere Austria on Wednesday. The first snowflakes are expected towards the end of the week, even at very low altitudes.

Snow is falling in low-lying areas, especially in western Austria

However, even small changes in the position of the low-pressure system over Italy would have a significant impact on precipitation levels and temperatures in Austria. In the provincial capitals, for example, it is still uncertain whether there will be snowflakes in Linz, St. Pölten, Vienna, and Eisenstadt; it is still unclear whether the first snowflakes will fall in the next few days. From the current perspective, snowfall is relatively certain on Thursday in Bregenz, Innsbruck, and Salzburg, and on Friday in Klagenfurt and Graz. In any case, it will be wintry in the mountains of Austria, where around 20 centimeters of new snow is expected from Thursday to Friday.”

Snow is also quite normal at low altitudes

In November, it is pretty standard for snow to fall from time to time, even at low altitudes in Austria. Over the last 30 years, the first continuous snow cover in the provincial capitals has occurred on average from mid-November onwards. Due to global warming, the first snow cover is now expected one to two weeks later than in previous decades.

The weekend will also be cold

It will remain cold until the weekend. Early temperatures over the next few days will range from minus eight to plus two degrees Celsius. Sunday will start with temperatures below minus ten degrees in many regions, especially in Vorarlberg, Tyrol, Salzburg, and Carinthia. In the afternoons, temperatures in Austria will range between minus two plus four degrees over the next few days. This means that temperatures will be around five to ten degrees below the typical values for the second half of November.
