Only in Copenhagen is the global language spoken better than in Vienna. There are various reasons for this.
Every year, the EF English Proficiency Index publishes a ranking that compares countries and regions according to their average level of English proficiency. 2.2 million adults took a test that measures reading, writing, speaking, and comprehension.
The results show that the English skills of Viennese people are the second best in a global comparison (countries where English is the national language are not tested). Vienna ranks behind Copenhagen but ahead of Stockholm, Amsterdam, and Helsinki. “In Austria, English is considered a key skill for international communication and is strongly promoted,” says Lena Buchegger from EF.
In addition, in countries such as Italy and France, the national language is culturally dominant, which means that English takes a back seat. Another advantage is that German and English come from the same language group, which makes learning easier for us. Surprisingly, the English skills of those under 25 lag behind those of older age groups. This is due to the pandemic. In a country comparison, Austria ranks third behind the Netherlands and Croatia.
