Snow in Vienna: This weekend, there will be a light snowfall for the first time, with up to 1 cm of fresh snow and frosty nights in the suburbs.
Things will get a little more exciting on Friday morning, according to Ubimet meteorologist Nikolas Zimmermann: Then “light snowfall is temporarily in sight again, this time with the southwest of Vienna having the best chances. With a little luck, it may also briefly dust the ground in the direction of Rodaun and Kalksburg.”
Depending on the intensity, the snow line will fluctuate “between low-lying areas and around 300 meters above sea level,” the meteorologist said. However, precipitation amounts will remain relatively low: only around 0.1 liters per square meter were forecast for Thursday. On Friday, “1 to 2 liters per square meter” could accumulate in the southwest of Vienna, for example, in Liesing, Zimmermann estimates. That could bring up to one centimeter of snow in some places.
As far as temperatures are concerned, it will remain early winter: the weekend will be mainly dry, with a few flakes not entirely out of the question on Saturday night. Light frost is likely at night, especially in the suburbs, and during the day the thermometer will only climb to a maximum of around 2°C.
The snowfall starting on Friday will be real snow, not the industrial snow that is often seen in Vienna. But that makes no difference to meteorologists: “The only difference is that the condensation nuclei come from a local, anthropogenic source,” says the weather expert.
