Since 1995, Austrian retailers have been permitted to open their doors on December 8, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. The arrangement, negotiated between social partners, remains contentious. Employees working on the holiday are entitled to extra pay and compensatory time off.
Which Stores Are Open
- Interspar, Eurospar, and Maximarkt: operating nationwide
- Spar: only selected branches open
- Hofer: stores open
- Rewe Group (Adeg, Billa, Bipa, Penny) and Lidl: remain closed, as in previous years
- Billa exceptions: only outlets at train stations and Vienna Airport are open
Retailers are generally allowed to trade between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.. A Chamber of Commerce survey shows that most shops in Vienna plan to open, with larger chains taking advantage of the opportunity while smaller businesses often stay shut. Importantly, employees cannot be compelled to work on this day.
Consumer Trends
Retail researcher Ernst Gittenberger from the University of Linz notes that December 8 has become a popular shopping day, particularly among younger consumers. Yet, public opinion remains split: more than half of Austrians surveyed oppose stores opening on the Marian holiday.
Business Considerations
According to institute director Christoph Teller, retailers outside busy locations must weigh the costs carefully. Rising expenses and staff surcharges mean that opening may not always be profitable. Extended hours do not necessarily boost sales, as purchases may shift within the available timeframe.
