Filipino faith communities across Austria filled their churches with music, devotion, and cultural pride as they celebrated this year’s Simbang Gabi, the beloved nine‑day novena leading to Christmas. From Vienna to Salzburg, the celebrations were marked by an extraordinary display of musical talent, with numerous choirs taking turns leading the liturgy in song.

In Vienna, the Filipino Catholic Chaplaincy once again showcased the depth of its musical ministry. The Filiino Catholic Chaplaincy Choir Vienna, Our Lady of Manaoag Choir, Couples for Christ Choir, Chancel Choir, and the Our Lady of Peñafrancia Choir each brought their unique sound and spirit to the novena masses. Their alternating participation allowed parishioners to experience a rich variety of musical styles—from solemn hymns to vibrant Filipino Christmas classics—reflecting the diversity and unity of the community.

Meanwhile, the Philippinische Gottesdienst Gemeinde (PGG) held its Simbang Gabi celebrations at the Catholic church in Floridsdorf. The PGG’s musical lineup was equally impressive, featuring the PROVIDENCE Choir, PGG Youth Choir, Vox Amoris Choir, MFC–The Voice Choir, Himig Pamilya Choir, MFC Intercessory Choir, The Oncers Choir, and the Sanghimig Choristers. Each group contributed its own interpretation of traditional and contemporary liturgical music, creating an atmosphere of reverence, joy, and cultural pride. Their performances highlighted the strong involvement of families, youth, and ministry groups in sustaining Filipino traditions abroad.

In Salzburg, the small but vibrant Filipino community under the chaplaincy of Fr. Edwin Reyes, SVD, also held its own Simbang Gabi celebration. Supported by a dedicated community choir, the faithful gathered to honor the cherished Filipino tradition despite the distance from home. Their celebration demonstrated how even small communities can create meaningful and heartfelt expressions of faith when united in purpose.

Across Austria, this year’s Simbang Gabi became more than a religious observance—it was a musical tapestry woven by dedicated choirs whose voices carried the warmth, hope, and resilience of the Filipino spirit. Their collective offering of song strengthened bonds within the diaspora and brought the joy of Christmas to Filipino families far from home.
