On Sunday, a surge of Arctic cold air will reach Austria, followed by several very cold days with widespread frost – and snow.

The wintry cold weather will continue over the weekend. In the increasingly dry air, calm and sunny winter weather will prevail more and more often. On Sunday, a surge of Arctic cold air will reach us, followed by several very cold days with widespread frost.

At the beginning of the new week, according to current forecasts, a low-pressure system will form over the Mediterranean, which, according to weather expert Isabella Winterer, could bring “several centimeters of fresh snow,” especially in the south. However, the exact development is still uncertain.

Clouds will quickly clear

On Sunday, clouds will initially prevail in the north and from Lower Carinthia to southern Burgenland, while the sun will shine frequently in the Alps. During the day, the clouds will quickly clear in the south as well, but they will linger a little longer in the far north. The west wind will be moderate to brisk. Maximum temperatures will reach -2 to +3 degrees.

Monday will start with moderate to severe frost, but it will be sunny in many places. During the day, clouds will move in from the southeast, but it will remain dry and the sun will still shine at times west of the Vienna Woods. With only light winds at times, maximum temperatures will only reach between -5 and 0 degrees.

Snowfall on Epiphany

Tuesday, Epiphany, will be particularly wintry in the south with intermittent snowfall. There will also be at least a few flakes in the central mountain regions and in the east, but it will remain mostly dry from Vorarlberg and North Tyrol to the Inn and Mühlviertel regions. The sun will also shine intermittently there. The northwesterly wind, which is picking up again to brisk to strong, will make the already frosty temperatures of only -6 to -1 degrees Celsius seem even icier.

On Wednesday, there will be light snow at times, with little sunshine. The northwest wind will be brisk to strong, with snow drifts expected, especially on the eastern edge of the Alps. The frosty weather will continue, with highs of -6 to -2 degrees.
