Whether in coffee, in snacks between meals, or hidden in processed foods, this sweet substance is everywhere.

However, according to longevity specialist Gerd Wirtz, a consistently high sugar intake can contribute to accelerating the body’s aging process.

More sugar than many people realize

Sugar is not only found in sweets, but also in bread, sauces, and ready-made products.

According to Wirtz, this constant availability means that people in Western countries consume significantly more sugar than the body needs.

In addition, sugar activates the reward system in the brain and can be both physically and psychologically addictive.

Not all types of sugar have the same effect

Sugar is not a uniform substance. In addition to glucose, there are also fructose and complex carbohydrates, among others.

Fructose in particular is considered problematic because it is very sweet and can increase the desire for further consumption.

In whole fruits, the sugar is absorbed more slowly due to fiber. Juices and highly processed products lack this regulating effect.

Glucose is an important source of energy, especially for the brain. However, the human body is able to produce this sugar itself, for example through metabolic processes in the liver.

Sugar as a driver of aging

A permanently elevated blood sugar level puts strain on the cells. Rapid rises in blood sugar promote inflammation and oxidative processes that are associated with premature aging.

At the same time, permanent insulin release can worsen insulin sensitivity and promote weight gain, including in the liver.

What relieves the body

Wirtz recommends consciously reducing hidden sources of sugar. Fiber-rich foods and regular exercise can help keep blood sugar stable and relieve the metabolism.
