In some places, temperatures in Austria were well below freezing again today, Friday, January 9, 2026. The lowest temperatures dropped to minus 16.1 degrees.
The freezing cold has had Austria firmly in its grip so far in January. While the minus 20 degrees mark has been broken several times in recent days – peaking on Thursday, January 8, at minus 27.9 degrees – the lowest temperatures on Friday, January 9, 2026, were 16.1 degrees below freezing. According to “GeoSphere Austria,” these were measured in Schwarzau im Freiwald (Gmünd district, Lower Austria).
Where it was still very cold in Austria on January 9
Behind Schwarzau im Freiwald are Zwettl (Lower Austria) with minus 14.2 degrees Celsius and Kleinzicken and Güssing (both Burgenland) with 13.6 degrees Celsius each. Temperatures also dropped particularly low in Bad Radkersburg (Styria, minus 13.3 degrees), Völkermarkt (Carinthia, minus 12.9 degrees), and Liebenau-Gugu (Upper Austria, minus 12.8 degrees). It remains cold in Austria
Incidentally, it will not necessarily get particularly warm here in the coming days. GeoSphere Austria has issued yellow cold warnings for parts of Austria on Saturday and for the entire country again from Sunday. On Saturday, most regions could see sub-zero temperatures in the single digits, with temperatures returning to double digits in some places in the days that follow. According to meteorologists, temperatures are expected to drop to “below minus 15 degrees in some places” in the inner Alps and in the north on Monday.
Up to 40 centimeters of new snow is expected in Austria
