Austria is heading into a turbulent stretch of winter weather, marked by persistent fog, thick cloud cover, and an increasing mix of rain and snow as the weekend approaches. Meteorologists warn that the coming days will bring not only bitterly cold nights but also a heightened risk of icy roads, especially on Saturday.

Friday: Fog Dominates, Bitter Cold at Dawn

On Friday, dense fog remains a defining feature along the Danube and across the northeastern and southeastern regions, with Lower Austria particularly affected. Elsewhere, passing clouds alternate with occasional sunny breaks. Early morning temperatures plunge to as low as –14°C, before climbing to between –3°C and +7°C during the day.

Saturday: Weather Shift Brings Widespread Precipitation

A significant change arrives on Saturday as thick clouds spread across the country, accompanied by widespread precipitation. Snow levels generally range between 800 and 1300 meters. In lower elevations, freezing rain may develop in some areas, creating hazardous driving conditions. The east remains mostly dry but stays shrouded in persistent gloom. Daytime temperatures hover between –2°C and +7°C.

Sunday: Grey Skies and Mixed Precipitation

Sunday continues the trend of overcast skies. Rain and snow fall intermittently—first in the south, then gradually extending into the eastern regions. Snow levels in the west fluctuate between 700 and 1500 meters, while initially higher levels in the east may drop as the day progresses. Sunshine is limited to higher mountain areas. Highs range from 0°C to +6°C.

Start of the Week: More Clouds, More Wintry Mix

The new week begins with another round of clouds and periodic rain or snow. Snow levels may sink into lower elevations, adding to travel challenges. A slight improvement is possible later in the day as drier air moves in from the south. Daytime temperatures remain steady between 0°C and 6°C.
