Energy specialists are sounding the alarm about a hidden drain on household electricity bills: devices that continue to draw power even when they appear to be switched off. This so‑called standby consumption may seem insignificant day to day, but over the course of a year it can noticeably increase energy costs.
Desktop Computers in the Home Office
As remote work becomes more common, many households now keep desktop computers permanently set up. When these machines are left in standby rather than fully shut down, they can generate an estimated additional cost of €12 to €18 per year. In homes with multiple devices, the financial impact rises accordingly.
Don’t Underestimate Gaming Consoles
Gaming consoles also offer energy‑saving modes, yet they are often left partially powered. Analysts estimate that consoles account for roughly six percent of the electricity consumption in an average household. Over time, unplugging both the console and the television can significantly reduce unnecessary energy use. The Energy Saving Trust further advises keeping software up to date, as updates can improve overall energy efficiency.
A Small Habit With Big Effects
While each individual device may seem harmless, the cumulative effect of standby power can be substantial. Energy experts encourage consumers to be more mindful of what remains plugged in—and to switch off devices fully whenever possible.
