Austria faces a week of unsettled and wintry weather, with temperatures remaining firmly below early‑spring expectations. While nights continue to bring severe frost in some regions, daytime highs will stay in the single digits. At least the eastern part of the country can look forward to more frequent sunny spells.
Front System Moves In on Monday
According to Geosphere Austria, another frontal system will sweep in from the west on Monday, gradually weakening as it crosses the country. Snow levels will rise from 600 to 1,300 meters, increasing the risk of icy conditions along the northern Alps. In contrast, the eastern half of Austria will see larger windows of sunshine throughout the day.
Winds will blow briskly from the west in Tyrol and Vorarlberg, while remaining mostly light elsewhere. Morning temperatures will range from –11°C to –4°C, with daytime highs between 0°C and +7°C.
Tuesday Brings Snow to the Northern Alps
On Tuesday, a changeable westerly flow will dominate the Eastern Alps. Cloud cover will prevail along the northern Alps and across northern Austria, accompanied by frequent snowfall. Lower elevations may see a mix of snow and sleet. Outside the main precipitation zones, brief sunny breaks are possible.
In the east, sunshine and clouds will alternate, with only isolated showers. The south and southeast will remain largely dry and sunny. Winds will blow moderately to briskly, and in exposed areas along the eastern Alpine rim, even strongly from the west-northwest. Morning temperatures will sit between –5°C and +3°C, with daytime values reaching no more than 0°C to +9°C.
Warm Front Arrives on Wednesday
A westerly upper-level flow will bring additional disturbances on Wednesday. After the last morning snow showers clear from the northeast, a warm front will move in during the day, bringing increasing snowfall and rain to western Austria. Snow levels will rise to around 1,000 meters.
Winds will initially remain moderate to brisk in the east but will ease significantly later in the day. Early temperatures will range from –7°C to +1°C, with highs between +1°C and +8°C.
Mediterranean Low Creates Uncertainty on Thursday
Forecast confidence decreases on Thursday as a Mediterranean low approaches. Current projections suggest that clouds will thicken along the southern Alps, where rain or snow is expected to begin early. The northern Alps and northern regions may start off brighter, but widespread cloud cover will soon spread across the country. By afternoon, precipitation could extend into additional regions.
Morning temperatures will lie between –9°C and +1°C, rising only to –3°C to +5°C during the day.
Sun Returns on Friday
On Friday, low clouds will linger along the northern Alps in the morning, but sunshine is expected to break through across Austria as the day progresses. Winds in the east will remain moderately strong from the northwest.
Temperatures will start between –10°C and –1°C, with daytime highs ranging from –1°C to +6°C.
