Germany plans to prolong its tightened border controls with all neighboring countries until the autumn, continuing a policy first introduced in May 2025. According to the Interior Ministry, the extension has already been formally notified to the European Commission in Brussels, allowing the measures to remain in place beyond the current deadline of 15 March.

Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) confirmed that the government is seeking to renew the temporary controls permitted under Schengen rules. “We are extending border controls at the borders with our neighboring countries. These controls are an element of our reorganization of migration policy in Germany,” Dobrindt told Bild. The government’s stated goals remain the protection of internal security and the further reduction of irregular migration.

Travelers Face Continued Delays

The decision means that commuters and travelers crossing Germany’s borders with its nine neighboring states should expect continued delays. The spot checks, which have been conducted on a rolling basis, will now continue at least until September.

Irregular Entries Declining

Since the introduction of stationary controls in September 2024, the German Federal Police have registered 67,918 unauthorized entries at the borders. Of these, 46,426 individuals were turned back at the border or returned shortly after crossing illegally.

At the same time, the number of first‑time asylum applications has fallen. According to the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF), 7,649 people filed an initial asylum application in January—almost half the number recorded in the same month the previous year.
