Austria is in for a weather roller coaster: after a brief but intense return of winter, temperatures will rise quickly, bringing a distinctly springlike feel by the end of the weekend.

Snow Warning as Winter Makes a Comeback

A marked winter outbreak will deliver widespread snowfall on Friday, especially across eastern and southeastern Austria. According to Geosphere Austria, heavy snow is expected in the northeast and southeast during the morning hours. Precipitation will gradually ease in the afternoon, lingering the longest in the southeast and around the Arlberg region.

Despite the wintry start, significantly milder daytime temperatures are on the horizon for the weekend.

Warm Front Brings Milder Conditions on Saturday

On Saturday, a warm front approaching from the west will bring dense cloud cover and widespread precipitation. Rain will begin early in the west and northwest, spreading eastward throughout the day. The heaviest precipitation is expected between the Arlberg area and the Mariazell region.

In Upper Austria, freezing rain may cause slippery conditions in the morning. The snow line will rise from around 1,000 meters to roughly 1,500 meters. Only the far southeast is likely to remain dry all day.

Morning temperatures will range from –11°C to +3°C, with daytime highs between 2°C and 12°C — warmest in the west.

Rain Dominates Sunday

On Sunday, skies will remain mostly overcast from Salzburg and Upper Austria eastward, with frequent rainfall and a snow line between 1,600 and 2,000 meters. The west and south will also see plenty of clouds, but conditions there should stay mostly dry until evening.

Temperatures will start between –3°C and +5°C, rising to 4°C to 14°C in the afternoon, with the mildest values again in western Austria.

Unsettled Start to the New Week

A new frontal system will brush Austria from the north on Monday. Showers are expected mainly north of the main Alpine ridge and from Upper Austria eastward. The snow line will remain high, between 1,500 and 2,000 meters. Sunshine will be limited, though the south and southeast can expect more frequent bright spells.

Morning temperatures will range from –2°C to +8°C, with daytime highs between 6°C and 15°C.

High Pressure Brings Improvement on Tuesday

Rising air pressure on Tuesday will gradually calm the weather. Precipitation in the Alpine region will taper off by late morning, and with a snow line between 1,000 and 1,500 meters, clouds will increasingly break up. By afternoon, dry and sunny conditions will prevail across all regions.

Temperatures will start between –4°C and +8°C, reaching highs of 7°C to 14°C.
