From April 1: Mobile Operators in Austria Raise Prices Again

Austria’s mobile customers will face higher bills starting in early April, as several major operators activate inflation‑linked price adjustments. Many tariffs across the country will increase by up to 6.5 percent, driven by so‑called value‑protection clauses embedded in contracts since 2012. More than half of all Austrian mobile tariffs include such clauses.

Inflation Index Triggers Adjustments

The increases are based on the 2025 Consumer Price Index published by Statistik Austria.
At A1, monthly base fees and any applicable flat‑rate charges will rise by 3.5 percent. The adjustment affects nearly all current customers across the A1, bob, and Red Bull Mobile brands.

Magenta will also raise prices by up to 3.5 percent. According to the company, only the monthly base fee is affected — add‑on packages and other services will remain unchanged.

Drei Customers Hit Hardest

Customers of Drei (Three) who have a value‑protection clause in their contract — roughly 60 percent — will see the steepest increases.
The company explains: “Since we did not apply an index adjustment in 2025 — unlike competitors A1 and Magenta — the 2026 increases range from 1 percent to around 6.5 percent, depending on the contract start date.”

Prepaid products, the “up” brand, and the newer “Handyfreiheit” offerings will not see any base‑fee adjustments.

Virtual Operators Stay Put

Many virtual mobile operators — companies that do not operate their own networks — are not planning any index‑based increases. This includes providers such as spusu and ventocom, which operates brands like Hofer Telekom (HoT) and Liwest Mobil.

Price Hikes Lower Than in Previous Years

While the 2026 adjustments are slightly higher than those in 2025, they remain well below the steep increases seen in earlier years.
In 2025, A1 and Magenta raised existing contracts by 2.1 percent, while Drei skipped adjustments entirely.
In 2024, increases reached up to 7.86 percent, and in 2023 they climbed as high as 8.6 percent.

No Special Termination Rights

Customers should note that these inflation adjustments are not considered traditional price increases under Austrian law. As a result, they do not grant an extraordinary right to terminate the contract.
This means customers who are still within their minimum contract period cannot simply cancel and switch providers in response to the higher fees.
