Austria begins Holy Week on a wintry note after the recent cold snap, with rain, snow and below‑average temperatures dominating the first half of the week. According to meteorologists at Geosphere Austria, more springlike conditions will not return until Maundy Thursday.

A Cloudy and Unsettled Start to the Week

Monday brings a mix of dense clouds and scattered sunshine, depending on the region.

  • From Vorarlberg across Salzburg and Upper Austria to East Tyrol, thick clouds settle in early.
  • In the east and southeast, the day starts brighter, but clouds quickly advance from the west.
  • Along the northern Alps, into the Waldviertel and Mostviertel, as well as western Styria, rain and snowfall set in by midday.
  • Snow levels range between 400 and 900 meters.
  • Even the eastern and southeastern regions may see isolated showers by evening.

Winds blow from the west to north, at times brisk north of the Alpine crest and strong in higher terrain. Morning temperatures fall between –4°C and +4°C, with daytime highs reaching 4°C to 13°C.

Polar Air Dominates Tuesday

A surge of cold polar air keeps Austria firmly in winter’s grip.

  • Dense clouds prevail across most of the country.
  • Sunshine appears only occasionally, mainly in southern regions.
  • From the Bregenzerwald to the Mostviertel, widespread and persistent rain and snow continue, with snow levels between 400 and 800 meters.
  • Parts of Upper and Lower Austria and Vienna may see scattered showers.

Northwesterly to northerly winds blow strongly in southern föhn regions and along the eastern Alps. Temperatures range from –4°C to +4°C in the morning and reach only 0°C to 11°C during the day.

Gradual Improvement on Wednesday

The northern half of the country remains under thick cloud cover with frequent rain and snow showers.

  • In northern upslope areas, snowfall can be persistent.
  • Snow levels hover between 400 and 700 meters.
  • The east and south enjoy longer dry spells and occasional sunshine.

Winds remain moderate to brisk from the north in the east and southeast. Morning lows dip to –4°C, while highs rise to 3°C–11°C.

Maundy Thursday Brings a Hint of Spring

The west sees the most noticeable improvement.

  • Western Austria enjoys widespread sunshine.
  • The east experiences passing clouds but also sunny intervals.
  • Winds blow moderately to briskly from the northwest to northeast in the east and southeast.

Temperatures remain cool early on (–4°C to +4°C) but climb to 8°C–13°C in the afternoon.

Friday: Mixed Skies, Milder Temperatures

Friday offers a blend of sun and clouds, with the most sunshine in the west and south.

  • In the north and east, the sun appears only briefly between cloud bands.
  • Local showers may develop in the mountains during the afternoon.
  • Snow levels rise to 700–1,200 meters.

Morning temperatures range from –4°C to +5°C, and daytime highs reach a more pleasant 9°C–15°C.
