A vigorous weather disturbance is sweeping from west to east across Austria on Friday, bringing widespread cloud cover, heavy rainfall, and even snowfall at higher elevations. The cold front, arriving with dense clouds, is expected to make for an unsettled and largely sunless day across much of the country.
Precipitation will begin in the west, where the snow line ranges between 1,000 and 2,000 meters above sea level. As the day progresses, the rain band will slowly shift eastward. The heaviest rainfall is forecast along the northern rim of the Alps, where downpours may become intense at times.
Sunshine will be in short supply nationwide, with only the south and southeast seeing slightly better chances for brief bright spells. Winds will remain light in the east and south, while other regions can expect moderate to brisk westerly to northwesterly gusts.
Morning temperatures will vary significantly: from –5°C to +2°C in the eastern half of the country, and from 3°C to 8°C in the west. Daytime highs will reach only 4°C to 10°C in the north and east, while the rest of Austria may see milder values between 12°C and 16°C.
Weekend Weather Outlook
Saturday: Clearing in the West, Lingering Clouds in the South
The remnants of Friday’s disturbance will gradually shift toward the southeast on Saturday. This will allow sunshine and dry conditions to return by late morning in western Austria and across regions from Upper Austria eastward. However, parts of Carinthia and Styria will hold onto stubborn clouds for much longer, with more substantial sunny intervals not expected until the afternoon.
Winds will be generally light. Morning temperatures will range from –2°C to +6°C, while afternoon highs will climb to a much warmer 12°C to 25°C, with the warmest conditions in the west.
Sunday: Mostly Pleasant Before Clouds Return in the West
Sunday will bring predominantly friendly weather to most of the country. Only a few harmless cloud patches are expected, allowing the sun to shine through for much of the day. The exception will be Vorarlberg and the Tyrolean Oberland, where clouds will thicken noticeably from the afternoon onward, followed by the first rain showers.
Winds will be moderate from the east to southeast in the Alpine foothills and eastern regions, while remaining light elsewhere. Morning temperatures will sit between –1°C and +9°C, with daytime highs reaching 14°C to 21°C.
