Austria is bracing for a significant influx of Saharan dust at the start of the week, adding a hazy filter to skies already dominated by thickening cloud cover. According to Geosphere Austria, the dust will contribute to reduced visibility and a muted appearance of the sun, even in regions where föhn winds briefly break up the clouds.

Clouds Thicken From the Southwest

On Monday, intermittent cloud gaps are expected along the northern Alps and in the east, thanks to föhn effects. However, clouds will steadily increase from the southwest throughout the day. Western regions — particularly Vorarlberg, Tyrol, and Upper Carinthia — will see a growing likelihood of light rain and embedded showers.

Moderate to brisk winds from the east to south will sweep through the eastern lowlands and some föhn‑prone valleys. Early temperatures will range from 3 to 10 degrees Celsius, rising to daytime highs between 12 and 22 degrees.

Tuesday: Weak Disturbance, Widespread Clouds

A weak weather disturbance on Tuesday will keep skies mostly overcast across the country. Only occasional, brief sunny intervals are expected. Light rain and scattered showers may occur repeatedly, especially in the west and south. Winds will ease noticeably everywhere.

Morning temperatures will lie between 4 and 11 degrees, with daytime highs reaching 11 to 18 degrees.

Wednesday: Low‑Pressure Influence Dominates

Austria will fall under the influence of a low‑pressure system on Wednesday. Cloud cover will prevail, though isolated sunny breaks remain possible. Rain may fall at times in all regions. Winds will generally be light to moderate and variable in direction.

Temperatures will start between 3 and 10 degrees and rise to 11 to 15 degrees, with up to 19 degrees possible where sunshine lasts longer.

Thursday: Unsettled With Showers

The weather will remain unstable on Thursday. Sunshine will mix with clouds, and showers are expected to develop during the day, particularly over mountainous areas. Winds will stay mostly light, strengthening only near showers.

Morning temperatures will range from 4 to 9 degrees, with highs between 15 and 23 degrees.

Friday: Continued Variability

A slight disturbance will keep conditions changeable on Friday as well. Sun and clouds will alternate, with some cloud layers becoming temporarily dense. Scattered showers are again expected. Winds will remain weak, picking up only in the vicinity of showers.

Temperatures will start between 4 and 10 degrees and climb to 16 to 23 degrees in the afternoon.
