Already since August 18, the number of new infections in Austria has consistently exceeded a value of 1,000 Corona cases in 24 hours. The more contagious delta variant has brought the Corona situation in the country to a head again, causing the numbers to rise mercilessly. Most recently, a total of 1,848 new infections were recorded in just one day on Wednesday, a high since the month of April!

And also in the hospitals the number of the Corona patients increases inevitably. 545 persons had to be medically treated on Wednesday due to an infection in a hospital, an increase by equal 35 in the comparison to Tuesday, 142 infected fought for their life in the intensive care unit – also here a clear plus of twelve patients. Experts are already sounding the alarm and warning of an overload.

“If the rising trend in the number of infections since the beginning of the summer is not reversed soon, the probability of reaching the utilization limit will increase increasingly,” according to the Corona Prognosis Consortium. As early as mid-September, more than 200 ill patients could be treated in intensive care units. The utilization limit is 33 percent and, in the worst case, this could therefore already be exceeded by September 15 in Vorarlberg and Upper Austria.

According to the forecast, on the cut-off date of September 15, there is a 68 percent probability that the occupancy rate for intensive care beds will be between 178 and 270 corona patients, and 602 in normal wards. In the next two weeks, this would therefore mean a total of 821 hospitalized patients. According to the experts, the largest proportion of critically ill patients is likely to be unvaccinated.

“Vaccinated intensive care patients are the exception,” ÖGARI President Walter Hasibeder of St. Vinzenz Zams Hospital in Tyrol explained to the “Kronen Zeitung.” “Unfortunately, the numbers of plaques in hospitals and also in intensive care units are increasing at a great pace,” the intensive care physician is further quoted as saying. And this could “quickly bring us back into difficult care situations.”

The doctor therefore appeals once again to the population to be vaccinated against the coronavirus as soon as possible. Because: “We absolutely need a higher vaccination rate than before”, says Hasibeder, according to daily newspaper “Kronenzeitung”. The main reason for this is to prevent the health system from being overburdened. Many experts therefore expect the Corona measures to be tightened again – possibly soon.

In any case, the Corona Task Force, consisting of the government, the states and experts, has not been idle over the summer and has been discussing further Corona rules. According to the Kronen Zeitung, concrete proposals could be made as early as next week to get the virus back under control in the country. Because without any tightening, a containment of the virus should be almost impossible.

But which measures could soon be tightened again in Austria? According to the “Krone”, tightening of the mask, entry and testing regulations is to be expected.

Mask obligation: a tightening of the mask obligation in the indoor areas is considered probable

Tests: the period of validity of antigen tests is also likely to be reduced – from 48 to 24 hours

Admission: a 1 or 2G rule for night catering could also be considered – where only vaccinated and recovered people could soon be allowed in

How the tightening of the Corona rules in detail look, is not yet (officially) known. Health Minister Wolfgang Mückstein is obviously thinking about new measures, because he wants to prevent another lockdown by all means – but without tightening this is unlikely to be feasible.
