AstraZeneca vaccine developer, immunologist Sarah Gilbert, is calling for a more equitable distribution of available Corona vaccine doses. Writing in a peer-reviewed journal Wednesday (Oct. 6), she said greater efforts must be made to ensure vaccines reach poorer countries in particular. By early September, just over 40 percent of the world’s population had received at least one vaccine dose, but barely two percent in the poorest countries, it said. Booster vaccinations and childhood immunization, as was already happening in Western countries, would increase pressure on supply chains. As long as vaccination rates remain so low in many countries, he said, the risk of new, more dangerous variants will continue.
Moderna’s Corona vaccine will no longer be given to people under 30 in Sweden for now. The health authority Folkhälsomyndigheten has decided to temporarily suspend use of the preparation for those born in 1991 and younger until December 1 as a precaution. The reason for this is evidence of an increased risk of side effects such as inflammation of the heart muscle (myocarditis) or pericardium (pericarditis), the agency announced Wednesday (Oct. 6). However, the risk of being affected is extremely low, it said. The affected age group should receive the Biontech/Pfizer vaccine instead, the agency recommended. Shortly thereafter, the Danes also spoke out. According to the Danish health administration, children and adolescents under 18 years of age in Germany’s northernmost neighbor will from now on only be vaccinated with Biontech/Pfizer.
