The Netherlands fears a new wave of coronavirus. The number of new infections rose sharply over the past seven days and is now 62 percent higher than the previous week. That’s the biggest increase since mid-July, the Institute for Public Health and the Environment RIVM said yesterday. Nationwide, 3,746 new infections were reported, nearly double the number reported on Wednesday of the previous week.
The number of patients in hospitals is also increasing significantly, according to the data. Hospitals are currently treating 524 Covid 19 patients, including 137 in intensive care units. Across the country, the alert level has now been raised to “concerning.”
Most of the infections have been recorded in major cities, according to authorities, but there have also been a great many in regions with strictly devout Protestants, the “Biblebelt.” Many orthodox Calvinists refuse vaccination.
About 68 percent of the approximately 17 million inhabitants are fully vaccinated, 83 percent of adults.
