On September 2, the City of Vienna began the first COVID booster vaccinations in retirement and nursing homes and among hospital staff. So far, 20,668 people have already been boostered. It is particularly important for older people to have a booster vaccination so that they continue to be well protected through the current 4th wave. Due to the rapid vaccination coverage at the beginning of the year, there was no third wave in the Viennese homes for the elderly and nursing homes. This protection is also reflected in the occupancy of COVID intensive care units: currently, no person is in an intensive care unit who is 80 years or older.

Thirteen percent of those over 90 have already received a booster, and 6 percent of those aged 80 to 89 have already received a booster. More than half of the elderly and nursing homes in Vienna have also already received a booster. To further promote these developments, Vienna is taking additional measures to inform the Viennese about the booster vaccination and to motivate them.

Health City Councillor Peter Hacker (SPÖ) briefly explained on Thursday what now needs to be considered and divided the population into three groups: For people who only get the first vaccination applies that the second vaccination should be 28 days later. For those who are already fully immunized by two vaccinations, the third sting is recommended in the following periods:

6-9 months: all persons older than 65 years, belonging to a high-risk group or persons from those areas who have had contact with people despite lockdowns. This includes healthcare and nursing workers, as well as educators and all those who were immunized with Astrazeneca’s vaccine in the first round.

9-12 months: This affects “everyone else,” according to Hacker. Those not included in one of the first two groups should receive the booster vaccine during that period. “I request that also communicate in this simplicity,” said Councilman Hacker.

To make booking vaccination appointments even easier, the City of Vienna has implemented a new vaccination management system in time for the large-scale Corona booster vaccinations and influenza vaccination. Active since this week, the system can be accessed via mein.wien.gv.at or the corresponding app and offers numerous advantages for users. In addition to easy access to vaccination registration, new features such as appointment reminders or information about seasonal vaccination campaigns have been implemented. This means that flu or TBE vaccination campaigns can be announced at an early stage. In addition, it is possible to make mere consultation appointments and the system can also be used for group bookings for vaccinations of family members.
