The City of Vienna has calculated the occupancy of intensive care units by vaccination status for the Corona Commission. It turns out that it is mainly a pandemic of the unvaccinated – and the elderly.
The numbers here are not absolute, but relative to the respective population size. For example, about 420,000 people aged 60 or older live in Vienna. Of these, about 175 unvaccinated patients/100,000 people were in normal wards in calendar week 48 (11/29 to 12/5). This adds up to about 735 hospital patients in the last week. In the same age group, there were a total of 143 vaccinated Corona patients in the hospital – five times fewer.
The statistics only count patients who were hospitalized for a Corona infection. Those who were admitted to hospital for another condition and tested positive in hospital are excluded from the statistics. In addition, only those who are fully vaccinated or convalescents with a partial vaccination are counted as vaccinated.
Vaccinated or unvaccinated: distribution in intensive care units in Vienna
The situation is similar in intensive care units in Vienna: About 220 over-60s had to be treated in an ICU for Corona infection last week – nearly 190 of them were not fully vaccinated.
However, it is also important to note that the vaccination rate in Vienna increases with age. Overall, a good 65 percent of the total population in Vienna is fully immunized, and among those over 60, the rate is well over 80 percent.
