The World Health Organization’s (WHO) European office is appealing for caution during the Christmas holidays in light of the pandemic situation. “If you plan to see friends and family, keep groups small and, if possible, take a test beforehand,” it said in a statement Thursday. Even those who are fully vaccinated should avoid crowded and confined places and wear a mask, it said.
“We are dealing with two highly transmissible variants that have the potential to overwhelm our already overburdened health systems,” WHO Regional Director for Europe Hans Henri Kluge said, referring to Delta and Omikron. Those eligible for a third dose of the vaccine should get vaccinated as soon as possible, he said. Even with the Omicron variant, vaccines are the best way to prevent serious illness and death, he said.
