On Sunday, the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Interior reported 15,419 new cases within 24 hours. This is the highest ever reported on a Sunday by the authorities since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic. The all-time record for new daily infections was also documented recently – it was 17,006 cases on Wednesday (January 12).
The seven-day incidence across Austria rose slightly to 1166.1 cases per 100,000 population (up from 1108.7 on Saturday). Most new infections within 24 hours were reported in Vienna (4196). In hospitals, the number of covid patients has again slightly decreased in the past 24 hours. There are currently 883 people in hospital, which is seven less than yesterday (Saturday) and 28 less than a week ago. 212 people are being cared for in intensive care units. That number dropped by two since Saturday and is down by 50 patients in one week.
