19,600 positive corona tests in schools this week

There were more positive PCR tests in Austria’s schools this week than in the previous week. A total of around 19,600 infections were registered during the screenings.

In the previous week, there were just under 19,000 registered coronavirus infections. Across Austria, nine schools (last week: eight) are completely closed and an additional 1,198 classes (previous week: 856) are entirely or partially obstructed.

6,582 positive corona tests at Viennese schools

In Vienna, 6,582 pupils (previous week: 5,266) were registered with infections, whereby a different test system, “Alles gurgelt,“ is used here than in the other provinces. In Upper Austria 3,533 positive tests were recorded (previous week: 3,214), in Lower Austria 2,669 (previous week: 3,011), in Styria 2,580 (2,839), in Tyrol 1,157 (previous week: 1,185), in Salzburg 1,080 (1,044), in Carinthia 960 (1,034), in Vorarlberg 602 (684) and in Burgenland 450 (457).

Development varies in the provinces

The development varies in the individual provinces. There was an apparent increase; also, in Upper Austria, an addition was registered, while Styria, Lower Austria, Vorarlberg, and Carinthia recorded fewer cases. In the other federal provinces, the numbers were more or less stagnant.

Since the semester break, fewer and fewer PCR tests have also been carried out despite the same test interval, probably due to the significant increase in entirely or partially closed classes. The test positivity rate increased from 0.9 to 1.6 percent in the previous week and remained about the same this week.

Still not fixed is the other testing strategy at schools. Currently, three tests are carried out per week, two of them using the more informative PCR method. After reducing tests for the general population announced by Health Minister Johannes Rauch (Greens), a solution for schools is currently being negotiated.
